Our garage doors have a lot of action throughout the day. However, most of us tend to take them for granted and pay little attention to them—until something goes wrong. A stuck garage door is a common problem faced by homeowners, and while it may seem trivial, it can pose a serious safety and security risk. Needless to say, a garage door that won't close should not be taken lightly.

If your garage door won't close or doesn't close properly, the first thing you need to do is determine what's causing the problem. Some common reasons why a garage door won't close include misaligned or damaged tracks, a malfunctioning or improperly adjusted opener, or a tangled or damaged elevator cable on the door. These issues should be handled by a properly trained and qualified garage door repair company, as fixing them yourself can lead to serious injury or more costly problems if not handled properly. However, by far, the number one reason a garage door won't close is because an electronic eye prevents the door from closing for security reasons. So, what exactly should you do when your garage door won't close, and more importantly, how do you know if it's a simple repair you can do yourself, or if you need a professional? Let's find out.

What to do when your garage door won't close

Fixing a garage door that won't close requires some troubleshooting, starting with identifying what's preventing it from closing. Here are 5 quick steps you can take to diagnose and correct the problem:

One of the most common reasons a garage door won't close is when something is blocking the track or the garage door sensor. Take a quick look around to see if something is preventing your garage door from closing. It is important to view the galvanized elevator cables on both sides of the door through the track. Usually, when the door is open, the elevator cable is neatly wound around the cable reel. If the cable comes off the roller or gets tangled, don't try to fix it yourself. Cables and associated components are under extreme strain. Any attempt to put the cable back on may require loosening some of these components, which could result in serious injury without proper training and knowledge. If a cable becomes detached or tangled, you may need a professional garage door technician to safely close the door and complete the repair.

Once you've checked for anything preventing your garage door from closing and made sure the cables are wrapped neatly around the drum, take a close look at the garage door sensors and make sure they're clean and lined up. Safety eyes are located on both sides of the door beside the track approximately 6 inches from the ground. Here's how they work: the sending eye sends an invisible beam of light to the receiving eye. If the receiving eye doesn't pick up the signal, it won't let the door close for safety reasons, as it will assume something under the door is blocking the signal and it's not safe for the door to close. The same thing can happen if one of the eyes is bumped out of alignment, so be sure to look closely to see if both eyes appear to be pointing towards each other. Misaligned security eyes are the number one cause of service calls in the industry. To fix this, simply move the eyes with your fingers until they are straight. If this was your problem, you've solved the problem and your door should now close when you activate it.

Sim Garage Door Wall Control

Now that you've ruled out clutter or dirty garage door sensors, it's time to check if you can use other methods to close the door. If your garage door has a wall-mounted control, try activating it to determine if your garage door is closed. If it operates via the wall control but your remote doesn't activate the door, then the problem may be a faulty garage door opener remote. Try changing the battery and see if that fixes the problem. If not, it may need to be replaced by a professional garage door technician.

If your garage door still won't close after all this, then you may need to repair your garage door or electric opener. If you find that the cable is detached or tangled from the cable reel, you are unlikely to close the door and you will need to call for service. If the cable is properly wound around the cable reel, you should be able to manually close the door safely by pulling on the red emergency release cord to disconnect the garage door from the opener and placing it in manual operation mode. Do not attempt to move the door by pulling on the red emergency release cord. This is only used to put the door in manual mode, not to raise or lower the door. After pulling the red cord to enter manual mode, grab the bottom of the door and lower it carefully.
