Older garage doors and electric door openers are what most people define as loud. Even newer, quieter systems can get louder if not maintained properly. After all, they are complex systems of many moving parts, each of which makes at least a little sound when in operation. However, if you feel that your garage door is louder than it should or was, it's always worth double-checking to make sure there's nothing seriously wrong. To help make diagnosing a noisy garage door easier, we've outlined some basic steps you can take to inspect and possibly fix a noisy garage door.

A simple visual inspection can tell you a lot about why your garage door is loud. However, before diving in for a visual inspection, open the garage door and check for any unusual noises. Try to determine if most of the noise is coming from your door or the electric opener. If you are not sure, close the door position and pull the red emergency release cord to put the door in manual mode. Press the wallstation or remote to activate the power opener. The opener will now operate without moving the door - hear if the opener is much quieter than when the door was installed. If it doesn't, and the loud noise is coming from the corkscrew, there probably isn't any way to make the corkscrew quieter. Chain-drive openers are inherently louder than belt-drive openers, so if you want a quieter system, you'll need to replace the electric opener.

Now lift and lower the door by hand. If you hear squeaking/groans, simply lubricating the hinges and rollers with a good quality light weight spray lubricant will usually make the door noticeably quieter. Do not lubricate the track as this will only attract dust and debris. If you hear a loud squeal, lubricant is unlikely to help, and your door may need some adjustment, best left to a professional. It's also a good idea to check your garage door seals for wear while you're using it, as these can wear down over time. Tighten xoob txiv ntoo
If the noise persists, use a ratchet wrench or socket to make sure all visible door, rail, and opener hardware are tightened. Be especially careful not to overtighten any nuts or bolts, as this will strip the heads, threads, and even shear the bolts. Be sure to contact a professional garage door repair company if you're not sure where to tighten or suspect any nut or bolt damage. Do not attempt to remove any bolts or nuts as some are under extreme tension and could cause serious injury.

Last but not least, check the garage door rollers and bearings. If the rollers are slipping more than they are rolling, they most likely need to be replaced, which could be the cause of the noisy garage door operation. Grab each roller with your fingers and try to swing it on the roller shaft. If it's only a slight wobble, the bearing may be worn and the rollers will need to be replaced. We do not recommend replacing the rollers yourself, as some of the components to which the rollers are attached are under extreme tension and one wrong move could result in serious injury.
